Seeing two Taydec's in the same race these days is quite unusual, which it seemed also gave John Suckling a desire not to let Andy Hiley take all the glory, John keeping his Taydec in front  of the mainly Class C Jaguars and putting up fastest lap in Class D just a second quicker than Adam.

Although Andy Hiley had won the race on the track, as an Invited guest  he unfortunately was not eligible for the rather fine trophy that was on offer, this was awarded to a rather happy looking  Mark Jordan.

Instead Andy Hiley was awarded a SRGT umbrella.

Many thanks to Mark Tyrell for this quote

“Just thought I'd mention how much I enjoyed seeing Andy Hiley racing his Taydec at Brands yesterday. That car is nothing less than drop-dead gorgeous and it goes like stink too! I've been in and around racing for 25 years and, amazingly, it's the first time I can remember seeing one race!

You should be applauded for making something so good available to Joe Public

You now have a new fan (and, with luck, maybe a new customer once the garage/workshop is built!)”.

A brief introduction : -

The APR Taydec is a sports racing  'Kit-car’ that has its origins in the heyday of 2 litre  sport prototype racing cars of the 70's.

The sleek style of the Taydec was designed and built by
Tom Clapham an engineer in Keighley in the 60/70's.

see History

Work on the Taydec project started in 2002  with five chassis with sets of bodywork having been built to date.

Why ?

It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain an affordable engine / gearbox unit for the front engined / rear wheel drive car.  Many units of this type are now long in the tooth and do require full rebuilds from our recent experience.

The modern FWD unit is light weight, powerful and readily available from any vehicle dismantler. The long term availability of power units that are available for the club racer, will have to be those using  the modern front wheel drive unit.  This may also include the ECU fuel injection and catalytic converter of that power unit.  The policing of a standard ECU must be possible.

The donor vehicles are Ford, Vauxhall and Mazda. This unlikely combination provides all the running gear at an affordable cost.

The Taydec is designed for the customer  who prefers to use : -

  • a transverse road car engine/gearbox package in preference to the bike engined cars.
(The design is such that the chassis will accept most of the modern crop of transverse engine/gearbox units that are on the market)
  • suspension is easily adjusted without the use of rosejoints.
  • ventilated discs at the front,
  • solid rear discs with a handbrake unit

all standard and easy to maintain.

The Taydec could be completed by any person who is capable enough to complete the building of any of the Kit Cars that are currently available on the market.

Our aim

Is to produce a race and/or trackday car that can utilize any transverse power unit.  Everybody has their own preference and  with the Taydec you the customer could quite literally take your own power/gear box unit out of the FWD car, install it in the Taydec and you would soon be up and running.

The choice is yours :

  • Ford Zetec
  • Ford Duratec
  • Rover K Series
  • Peugeot

In John’s opinion the Honda Type 'R' power unit would be fantastic, with its variable valve timing, 6 speed sequential gear box, limited slip differential and traction control. This unit would surely make a very good racing car or a brilliant track day car.

The aim is to make the APR Taydec competitive within the 750 Motor Club for Kit Cars (particularly Class A)  and the Sports Racing & GT Championships. (see results to date)

All credit must go to the Radical and Westfield TRX2 as they are wonderful cars, but not everyone today wants the bike engine/gearbox package. The Taydec is slightly bigger and therefore has enough room behind the driver for most power units.

John's preference would be the Porsche Boxter unit, but this unit is quite rightly banned from the 750 KIT Car Championship, on the grounds of cost.

The Taydec Kit includes the following:-

Chassis space frame construction
Aluminium clad box section
Front and rear wishbones
Uprights
All discs calipers and hubs

5 GRP body panels  - front and rear, engine cover and 2 side pontoons.

Estimates are that the package would be comparable to most of the quality  Kit Cars available on the market. A  car could be completed for less than £10,000 by a competent customer, depending on the choice of the power unit.

John has entering
his Taydec in the 2004 Sports Racing and GT Championship which is run in conjuction with the 750 Motor Club.

Car No. 53 has been built and is very much proving itself in Class B of the 750 Motor Club 2004 Kit Car Championship. (Driver : Andy Hiley)
After a determined start to the season Andy’s well deserved maiden win was achieved at Mallory Park on 15th August 2004, followed immediately by another win on the same day in the next rescheduled race. Andy Hiley 3rd win of the season was achieved at Oulton Park on 29th August 2004.

There is also a car available with a 1600 cc Rover K Series Engine and Gear Box.  This car is eligible for the 750 Motor Club Kit Car Championship running in Class A.
